County Transportation Metrics is a project of the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC) and will provide a roadmap for setting transportation priorities.

Clallam County

Clallam County is in the northwestern portion of Washington's Olympic Peninsula extending nearly 100 miles along the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the north and more than 35 miles along the Pacific Coast on the west. The county includes the traditional lands of the Klallam (for whom it is named), Makah, and Quileute peoples.

Traditionally, much of Clallam County's economy has reflected the area's natural abundance with jobs in forestry, wood products and fisheries. As demand has decline for some of the goods-producing and agricultural products in the county, positions in leisure and tourism have grown in their place. The service sector has grown in recent years. The county houses two prisons, a hospital and a school district, which are top employers. Forks became a tourism draw when the Twilight books and movies put the small town on the map.

Over the past 20 years, the economy has experienced slow but steady growth. The county's major costal city of Port Angeles has an active port district. Science and academic institutions have also grown in the area. The Department of Energy's Marine Sciences Laboratory is based at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Sequim. Peninsula College is also a vibrant part of the community and offers programs in business, healthcare and trades. In addition, new migration has helped the region grow as retirees are attracted to Sequim's sunny climate.
