County Transportation Metrics is a project of the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC) and will provide a roadmap for setting transportation priorities.

Clark County

Clark County is located in southwestern Washington, across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon.  It is the fifth most populous county in the state. Clark County was the first county of Washington, named after William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The provisional government of the Oregon Territory in 1845 created the county.  The county seat is in Vancouver, which is also the largest city.

The area's economy has evolved from trading and agriculture to lumber and fishing. Later, shipbuilding and aluminum dominated the economy. In recent times, energy from hydroelectric project on the Lewis and Columbia rivers has fueled manufacturing growth. In the 1970's the county began to attract investments in electronics, which became its most important industry in the 1990s and remains so today. Wafertech, Hewlett Packard, SHE America and Linear Semiconductor are important employers.

Clark County is part of the Portland Metropolitan Area and its economy must be understood in that context. One third of the county's labor force (50,000+ workers) commute to Portland on a daily basis while only about 11,000 commute in the opposite direction.
