County Transportation Metrics is a project of the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC) and will provide a roadmap for setting transportation priorities.

Kitsap County

Kitsap County is at the northern end of the Kitsap peninsula, jutting into the Puget Sound between the Olympic Peninsula to the west and King County to the east. Its county seat is at Port Orchard, and its largest city is Bremerton.

Water transportation is dominant in the culture and economy of the county.  The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton is the centerpiece of the county's economy and the single largest employer.

National Defense has been key to the development of Kitsap County. In the 1880s the US government chose Port Orchard as the site of a repair facility to help support naval operations in the Pacific Ocean. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton was followed by a torpedo testing station at Keyport, a refueling station at Manchester and a nuclear submarine base at Bangor, as well a many smaller supporting facilities.

As the regional economy has expanded, Bainbridge Island became a bedroom community for greater Seattle. Fast and dependable ferry service from Winslow and the Agate Pass bridge made the strawberry farms and second-growth forest prime real estate.
